Q&A
What is the role of an architect?
Architects are the design experts of a construction project. They are responsible for translating your vision into architectural solutions that are both functional and aesthetic, ensuring that every detail, from space planning to materials, is designed with care before time and resources are spent building. An understanding and navigation of structural requirements, zoning laws, building permits and codes, environmental and energy considerations, as well as historical architecture are among the core expertise an architect provides.
What are the key benefits of hiring an architect?
The advantages of hiring an experienced architect are numerous. Some of the key benefits include:
translating your aesthetic, lifestyle and personal needs into a functional and beautiful design.
protecting your investment by ensuring high-quality, long-lasting materials and construction.
improving your home value with elevated, custom design solutions.
creating plans that maximize natural light, flow and square footage.
anticipating and mitigating costly construction errors saving precious dollars and time.
serving as a strategic partner and advocate with the various trades throughout the project.
What differentiates Lyon Architecture?
Our team is built on the foundation of big firm expertise, but with the nimbleness and personal connection of a boutique firm. This allows us to provide elevated design solutions with the dedicated concierge service our discerning clientele expect. Fostering long-lasting relationships with our clients is at the core of our mission and is what drives us on a daily basis.
What is Lyon Architecture’s design philosophy?
We don’t have one set design philosophy as each project presents a unique opportunity. Our approach is catered to what works best for our clients. Whether you like a more hands on design process, or you prefer to follow our lead, the goal is the same — a thoughtful design solution that our clients love.
What is the first step in your process?
The very first step we take with any project is discovery — to learn about you and your vision. We ask a lot of questions and listen intently to gather as many details as we can. Upfront, clear communication and an understanding of your goals is invaluable and produces a more seamless process and successful outcome.
What factors impact the architectural fees?
There are many factors that affect the budget necessary for architectural services including, but not limited to, the size and scope of the project, the timeline, the complexity of the site and the design as well as the number of design options and revisions. It’s important to understand the scope and value of these services at the outset of the project.
Beyond the design phase, what other services do you offer?
In addition to the architectural design phase, other services include:
INTERIORS / millwork design, finish selections and curation, fixtures and fittings selections, showroom visits
*CONSTRUCTION / site meetings, review of field conditions, providing information during the construction phase as needed, and monitoring construction progress, quality and conformance with design.
LANDSCAPE / site analysis, landscape and hardscape element coordination — indoor/outdoor connections, terraces, pools, etc.
HISTORIC APPROVALS / representation and coordination with Old Georgetown Board, Commission of Fine Arts, Historic Preservation Office, and other approval agencies
* Involvement throughout the construction phase is strongly recommended as it is extremely beneficial to the success of the project. Maintaining a critical eye on the design details and decisions helps prevent costly errors, protects your investment, and preserves your original vision.
